McNally Robinson Toronto and Winnipeg Polo Park stores close

The Toronto store, which opened earlier this year, was gorgeous, and I had many friends who worked there. And the Polo Park store will always have a special place in my heart, because the premiere party for FlashForward, the ABC TV series based on my novel of the same name, was held there on Thursday, September 24, 2009.

My heart goes out to all the fine booksellers who lost their jobs today.

I'm studying at the University of Thessaloniki in Greece, at the English Department. At the moment, I'm working on a research paper on your "Mindscan". I'm really thrilled that I found you here! You are an amazing writer but who am I to say that? Best wishes for a happy new year!

I have friends that work at the Grant Park store in Winnipeg, and thankfully they weren't affected.

It's tough times if you're trying to expand. I hope McNally Robinson make it through the bankruptcy proceedings, and come out a stronger company.

Sad. Very sad.
Can't blame me though, I'm doing my part to keep things rolling. I buy about 45 paperbacks a year, plus about 10 softcovers.

And on the flip-side, reading all your comments on eReaders this past little while just reinforces my option that that whole technology/industry is (still) a joke.

Don't get me wrong, the technology could really go somewhere if everyone involved in it would stop trying to have their own proprietary system. The only way eReading is going to be universally accepted is if there's a universal standard. And if the powers involved don't understand what that means, think LP, cassette tape, CD, VHS, DVD, Blu-ray. Yes, those are all physical formats/standards, but the concept is the same - one standard that is universal between all content and hardware.

BTW, hope you had an awesome Christmas and have a great New Years too.
