Is this meant as a sequel to the Tim Burton movie?
Nope, forget the Burton; this is a reboot, retooling the Paul Dehn script from the fourth APES film, Conquest (which, for my money, is one of the best SF films ever made).
I've heard some news on this. Apparently they've switch directors to Joss Whedon and it's going to be a musical similar to what played out on the Simpsons years ago, with all of the Chimpanzee character's being played by opera singers.
(I am completely and utterly kidding of course :)
