Booked on More 2 Life

I have two appearances coming up on TVOntario's More 2 Life with Mary Ito. TVOntario is the educational broadcaster in Ontario, Canada.

This Thursday, January 26, 2006, at 2:00 p.m., horror writer Edo van Belkom and I will be on talking about books that really frightened us (my picks are Helter Skelter by Vincent Bugliosi, The Andromeda Strain by Michael Crichton, and The Time Machine by H.G. Wells).

And on Tuesday, March 28, 2006, at 2:00 p.m., I'll be part of a panel discussion about what it means to be human.

Not that anyone's keeping track, but these will be my seventh and eighth appearances on More 2 Life, and the one this week will mark my 221st TV appearance.

Rob - your thoughts on 2 questions if you don't mind:

why is the conservative party in Canada winning?
are both the conservative and liberal parties somewhat "not pro-American?"

and of-course - Congratulations on the blog of note induction!

Hi, Dr. Nazli!

Nobody's anti-American; rather, all our parties are, quite rightly, pro-Canadian ... and sometimes our own interests clash with those of our good friends south of the border.

The Conservatives are winning for the very simple reason that the incumbent Liberals were caught red-handed in a scandal, involving misappropriation of public funds to the benefit of their party.

Thanks Rob :-)

But of-course that begs the question, why are you voting for the liberals then? - now granted, I understand and empathize with you from an ideological perspective - but just curious, given your fertile and thoughtful mind...

BTW - both parties may be appropriately pro-Canadian, but I happened to catch their ad campaign and both were "accusing" the other party of being like the current American administration - but of-course you could argue that this does not necessarily mean they are "anit-American"

I must just be in the mood for an intellectual jaust, Rob - and you presented the opportunity :-)

cheers,
Nazli

Will watch for you on t.v! Also while were asking questions about elections why is the NDP not winning when they are not using scare tactics and represent most of Canada?(The working not in a huge usiness making loads of money part of Canada)

Hi, Dr. Nazli. It's simple; the other guys -- the Conservatives -- are crooks, too. See, this book, for instance. So, the only guys with a prayer of winning are both crooks, and I'm choosing to vote for the lesser of two evils. :)

And if being dissatisfied with the current US administration is being anti-American, well, then the majority of Americans are anti-American ... :)

The NDP isn't winning because it's a flagrantly socialist party, and although many Canadians like socialism, they mostly like it packaged less blantantly. :) The NDP has never formed a federal government in Canada, although they have been in power at the provincial level, including in Ontario (where I live) and British Columbia.

I had to laugh about your comment that you are choosing the lesser of two evils. As an American, I felt the same way with John Kerry and George W. Bush in 2004. I agree with Mr. Kerry on almost everything and he is a fine Senator, but it was disappointing to think he was the best that Democratic Party to offer.

I have been following your election lately and it's interesting to hear about corruption north of the border. Lord Acton said it best: "Power corrupts, absolute power corrupts absolutely"

I agree with your choice of Helter Skelter as a scary book. More frightening than fiction. I read it in the mid '70s and never forgot it.
